Advocacy vs. Marketing
Is it advocacy or marketing? I am asking out of a place where I genuinely want to have this conversation.
By definition, advocacy is public support for or recommendation of a particular cause or policy. Marketing, by definition, is the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.
When I look at how other advocates work within the industry, they share stories and facts to connect with consumers in a way that is also sharing the true value of beef. When you market a product are you not working to communicate the true value of a product as well?
Yes, marketing refers more to making a sale and advocacy is often used as more of an educational and promotional method. However, don’t the two go hand-in-hand?
I’d like your opinions on this because it’s been on my mind for a while. I see both sides of it but believe we may need to shift our mindset as an industry to think about how advocacy and marketing are more similar than we realize and how they work together.
