Volunteer without the Stress
Volunteer: a person who freely chooses to take part in an enterprise or project
I’d encourage you to take a moment and think back to the youth organizations that impacted you the most in your life. Now, was it the organization or the people within it who made those experiences and moments impactful?
I”d argue that it is ALWAYS the people! Now, sometimes these people were paid but typically it was not nearly enough compared to the amount of effort that was put forth.
I remember being an extremely shy child who was easily embarrassed and could burst into tears at any moment. However, my hippology and livestock judging coaches saw my potential, wanted to help me grow my confidence and believed in the future of agriculture.
They accomplished all of that out of the generosity of their hearts and without that, I wouldn’t have this podcast or newsletter.
My point is this. Volunteers are necessary in this world and in our industry.
I am not saying that we should offer everything for free and overwhelm ourselves with volunteer activities. Please do NOT do that. However, please DO find at least one youth organization to volunteer for. Volunteer for a 1-day event, be a guest speaker, a judge or take on planning that event if you are passionate about it.
I volunteer as an advisor for our North Dakota Junior Red Angus Association. I do this not because I have the time but because I have a passion for cattle and education and I recognize the impact youth organizations had on how far I’ve come today.
Volunteering teaches youth the power of kindness, that it’s important to give back and it provides a sense of confidence that they can pursue their dreams because YOU support them in getting there.
Here are ways to volunteer without the stress.
Volunteer for a 1-day event
Offer to be a guest speaker at a small event
Set your limits at the beginning. Say what you are willing to donate and how much time you can realistically offer.
Remember you are doing it for the kids, not for you :)
How do you volunteer each year?
