Leverage Convention Conversations During and After the Convention

Conventions. What a place to start new relationships and grow old ones. But it takes more than just attending to build these relationships and get the most value from the event. Yes, you can gain valuable information from the speakers but if you aren’t engaging and networking, you are leaving 90% of the value behind.

Here’s a quick guide to getting the most out of conventions and creating conversations that will build valuable relationships. A little shy? I’ve been there and can help you out with that too!

  1. Come prepared

Know what your goal of the convention is. Is your goal to find solutions to problems on your ranch, make sales or simply increase your network? Once you know what your goal is, be sure to have 1-2 sentences prepared to introduce yourself. Who are you? What do you do? Why do you do it? Who do you help? This is equally as important for ranchers as it is other business owners. It helps strengthen that initial connection. If you are going for specific speakers and topics, I always like to have questions prepared in advance.

2. Connect Afterwards

Don’t let the conversations stop there! Be sure to snag a business card, email or phone number to connect with them afterwards. I like to connect on social media too! You never know when you may need their input or advice later on.

3. Keep the Conversations Going

If you had a great conversation going with someone at the convention, don’t be afraid to keep that going afterwards. It’s as simple as saying “It was nice to meet you and discuss (blank).” or “I had another thought come to my mind, what are your thoughts on ________.”

I’d encourage you to take these 3 tips and apply them to the next conference you attend! Conversations are key to making progress on your ranch as well as building personal relationships so don’t be afraid to start them and always remember to keep them going.
