Sorting Through the Noise: My Favorite Places for Beef Industry News
It feels like the days are whizzing by and trying to keep up with everything that is happening is impossible. However, staying up to date with events that are happening in not only the beef industry but also locally and nationally is important. Understanding the current state of the industry and world around us ultimately impacts our management decisions and how we go about our lives. Here are a few of my go-to resources during my busy and slow seasons to keep my up to date.
My first source for news is podcasts. I listen to podcasts when I am making breakfast, driving, feeding cattle or doing odds and ends tasks around the ranch or house. My podcast, Casual Cattle Conversations, isn’t directly focused on current events so I listen to others that are. These include Discover Ag, Ranch It Up Radio Show and Ag News Daily just to name a few. There are others I turn to as well, but these are my regulars. My favorite part about listening to podcasts is that it is a passive activity. It doesn’t take extra time out of my day to consume the information. It can be done while I am doing something else.
Outside of podcasts, I also like to read news articles online and in newsletters. My favorite online sources include Drovers, Beef Magazine and Morning Ag Clips to read a variety of current events that are happening in not only beef, but also other agriculture industries. These online platforms also have newsletters which are amazing and provide me with top notch information to share in my own newsletter.
All of these resources are great for staying informed about the national and global agriculture industry, but what about local happenings and non-agriculture evens? Newsletters and online articles are also how I find information about global events. 1440 and the Pour Over are my go-to sources for national news. If you like watching the news, go for it. I’d just rather read or listen on my own time. For local happenings, I turn to publications and articles from my state cattlemen’s affiliate and breed association. The local small-town paper is also still serving a great purpose in today’s digital age.
However, you like to consume information, keep at it. There are resources out there for everyone. We truly live in an era with an abundance of information and not enough time to consume it all. Find what works for you and do your part in staying informed.
