How We’ve Always Done It

“That’s the way we’ve always done it…”

Some things work and have always worked so we don’t change them. There may also be a sentimental component to these practices. I know I’m a bit sentimental about Old Blue pictured above, but that doesn’t mean Grandpa’s old truck is the best option. This was brought to light in my latest podcast episode.

Grazing corn stalks is not a new method. Odds are your grandfather and father utilized this practice too. However, there is always new data and research being done on this practice. That’s what was discussed in the latest episode with Dr. Jim MacDonald. This got me thinking about other practices that we generationally pass down.

Do we adjust our practices to current data enough?

We often say and admit that the most dangerous words are “…because that’s the way we’ve always done it.” Yet, we still use that as an answer and excuse for our actions.

How can we do a better job checking ourselves and ensuring we don’t continue to use these words as our reason for doing things?

It becomes a matter of connecting with the experts in some form our fashion.

How do you find the most relevant data that influences your management decisions?
